SUMMARY:CLIMARES Webinar Series – #3 + Workshop - Beyond ‘Scientific’ Scenarios: Plural Storylines for Climate and Mobility Research
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Simon Bunchuay-Peth\, Lead Developer of the Climate Mobilities Hub at the University of Vienna will explore that climate futures are usually communicated through probabilistic scenarios and model projections based on climate data and scripts. They are widely regarded as objective scientific knowledge\, and policy and decision makers therefore rely predominantly on them. However\, these scenarios can only tell part of the story. Changes in temperature\, time horizons\, average precipitation and similar values are estimates of what climate futures will most likely look like. Yet such numbers cannot tell us what these scenarios actually mean for people on the ground. To understand the bigger picture\, we need approaches that bring scientific findings and scenarios into dialogue with experiential\, social and cultural knowledge\, and not least with epistemologies that are often neglected in climate adaptation. \nPlural climate storylines (Rusca et al.\, 2024) offer such an integrative approach. They build on physical climate storylines\, which describe plausible and internally consistent pathways of how climate events and their consequences may unfold instead of estimating likelihoods. Plural climate storylines extend this approach by placing power relations\, marginalized epistemologies\, co-production and the aspirations of affected communities at the centre. \n"Storylines are well placed to mediate social and physical worlds and to work as boundary objects between different forms of knowledge\, social actors\, and users of climate information at multiple scales." (Rusca et al.\, 2024\, p. 738) \nThis CLIMARES seminar\, with an optional workshop for PhD researchers\, takes a closer look at the potentials and challenges of plural climate storylines. Drawing on research on climate-related mobility and immobility\, including fieldwork with Nyangatom pastoralists in the Lower Omo Valley in Ethiopia\, Dr. Simon Bunchuay-Peth (University of Vienna) will share insights from the Cultural Heritage in Motion (CuHeMo) project. He will illustrate how climate storylines can be adapted to specific research contexts\, what challenges may arise in the process and what potentials this methodology holds. The seminar shows how plural storylines can make visible what aggregated projections tend to overlook. It discusses conceptual foundations\, methodological options and the practical and ethical challenges of co-producing storylines across different knowledge systems. In the optional afternoon workshop\, PhD researchers will develop and test plural storylines for their own research contexts. \nRefereneces:\nRusca\, M.\, Sverdlik\, A.\, Acharya\, A.\, Basel\, B.\, Boyd\, E.\, Comelli\, T.\, Dodman\, D.\, Fraser\, A.\, Harris\, D. SUMMARY:CLIMARES Webinar Series - #2: Co-construction beyond participation: Who decides what counts as evidence?
DESCRIPTION:Co-construction beyond participation: Who decides what counts as evidence?\nInsights from the Wellcome-funded programme\, The Health Impacts of Climate Change on Precarious Outdoor Workers in Urban Vietnam. \nThe seminar\, presented by Dr Anh Vu\, Research Director at the Nation Centre for Social Research in the UK\, will examine the co-constructed research approach that we have developed over the past three years with informal outdoor workers in urban Vietnam. Its central concern is not simply whether affected communities participate in research\, but whether they exercise meaningful authority over the production of knowledge. \nIt is important to emphasise that this seminar focuses specifically on the co-construction of evidence about the climate-related health risks faced by workers. This is a critically underdeveloped area in the existing literature. Although research increasingly documents the health consequences of climate change\, there remains insufficient evidence grounded in workers’ own knowledge of how climatic hazards are encountered\, interpreted and managed within the everyday realities of precarious employment. The experiences of informal outdoor workers are particularly likely to remain absent from formal evidence systems because their work\, exposures and health needs are not always adequately captured by conventional occupational health categories\, standardised measures or institutional datasets. \nIn conventional participatory research\, communities may be consulted\, interviewed or invited to comment on findings\, while researchers retain control over the questions\, categories\, methods and standards of evidence. Our programme sought to redistribute that authority. Workers contributed to defining the research questions\, identifying relevant forms of climate exposure and health harm\, assessing the adequacy of existing measures\, interpreting findings and shaping potential interventions. \nIf you would like to attend this webinar\, please\, register at the link below.

SUMMARY:CLIMARES Webinar Series - #1: Tales of a Transdisciplinary Journey
DESCRIPTION:Tales of a Transdisciplinary Journey: Evolving Social-Ecological Theories\, Methodologies and Methods in Pastoral Systems. \nThis seminar aims to provide PhD students with insights into different research approaches and methodologies used in sustainability and climate resilience research. The invited speaker will introduce their research and discuss the theoretical and conceptual frameworks that underpin their work. Particular attention will be given to how these frameworks shape methodological choices\, data collection\, analysis\, and the interpretation of research findings. The seminar will encourage critical reflection on research design and interdisciplinary approaches while fostering an interactive discussion with participants. It is designed to support PhD students in strengthening the conceptual and methodological foundations of their own research and to inspire them through the experience and perspectives of an established researcher. \nIf you would like to attend this webinar\, please\, register at the link below.

SUMMARY:Climares Inception Meeting
DESCRIPTION:From 6-14 December 2025\, Climares organised its inception meeting at the Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech\, Morocco. The inception workshop brought together consortium partners; WP leads\, country coordinators\, cooperation partners and PhD candidates. During the workshop we started the co-creation of the conceptual\, methodological\, and ethical building blocks of Climares. It was also an opportunity to experience and further shape the interdisciplinary character of the consortium\, and of course to build our Climares team and to get to know each other better. \nPart of the workshop programme took place in a plenary room to ensure we developed a common understanding of approaches\, whereas other parts of the programme took place in groups organised along workpackage or country for further development of workpackage plans for the year ahead\, and refinement of ideas. \nThis inception workshop was the first of three consortium-wide workshops which will be held. During the next workshops we will focus more on reviewing the results\, co-analysing findings and drawing cross-case comparisons. \n

SUMMARY:Climares Academy
DESCRIPTION:The Climares Academy (CA) is an ongoing learning and reflection site for the PhD researchers and other participants in Climares. The Climares Academy started with two months of intensive training for which the PhD researchers were hosted by our partner\, the Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II in Rabat\, Morocco. The PhD researchers were trained by alternating members of the consortium on the following thematic\, skills and methods modules: \n\nThe climate change story\nLivelihoods in contexts of climate change: Relational and intersectional perspectives\nLocally-led climate adaptation\nAcademic writing\nHow to manage your PhD\nStarting your research proposal\nPeople-centred fieldwork and qualitative data generation\nObservational qualitative methods\nResearch ethics\, integrity\, and safety & security\n\nAfter the training\, the researchers had the opportunity to present their first research ideas during the inception meeting. \n \n
